Spotlighting one of our two pilot sites for Culture Counts: Purnululu School
The school sits on Gija Country in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, serving the Woorreranginy community (also known as Frog Hollow) about 35km from Warmun and 235km from Kununurra, just off the Great Northern Highway. Gija language, stories, and On Country learning are already woven through how children learn here, and it’s a privilege to be working alongside the community to bring that same strength into mathematics education.
Over the next 18 months, ATSIMA and The University of Queensland evaluation team will be partnering with Purnululu to develop a Community-led approach to maths that reflects Gija knowledge and ways of seeing the world building on what’s already working, not replacing it.
